The question of whether the DSA is 'Communist' depends entirely on how the term is defined. If 'Communist' means adherent of Marxist-Leninist political method -- vanguard party, one-party state, armed revolution, abolition of bourgeois democracy -- then the DSA is not Communist and is explicit about not being so. If 'Communist' is taken to mean adherent of the core economic and class analysis of Karl Marx -- class warfare between owners and workers, the abolition of private ownership of major productive enterprise, internationalism as the proper horizon of working-class politics -- then the alignment is direct and the DSA's own platform documents it in language Marx himself would recognize.

DSA explicitly self-identifies as democratic socialist, not Communist. It rejects Soviet authoritarianism.
