Section II -- DSA Doctrine and Ideology
The DSA's core stated goal, as articulated in its 2024 national platform, is 'the abolition of capitalism and the creation of a democratically run economy' (Democratic Socialists of America, 2024). The organization is explicit, however, that it rejects 'the bureaucratic, authoritarian model of socialism' associated with the Soviet Union, the People's Republic of China under Mao, and other twentieth-century single-party socialist states. This distinction -- between democratic socialism as a movement and Marxist-Leninist communism as a state form -- is the rhetorical center of every official DSA self-description.
Headline policy positions include single-payer national health insurance (Medicare for All, with the elimination of private insurance as a parallel system), a Green New Deal that places energy and major industrial sectors under public ownership, the decommodification of housing ('housing as a human right', with substantial public construction and rent control), and a broadly anti-interventionist foreign policy. In 2021, the National Convention passed a resolution calling for U.S. withdrawal from NATO -- a position reported across mainstream coverage as a sharp break from the established American left (Politico, 2021; Foreign Policy, 2021).
Internally, the DSA is divided between two strategic camps. The 'dirty break' faction holds that working through the Democratic Party is a temporary tactic and that the long-term project is building an independent socialist party. The 'inside-outside' faction holds that the Democratic Party ballot line is a permanent feature of the American political landscape and that socialist gains must be made within it. The dispute shapes every internal vote on candidate endorsements and electoral strategy.
